How to apply for Medicaid

⏱ 2 min

Key points

  • You can apply through your state Medicaid agency or through HealthCare.gov.
  • Every state must take applications online, by phone, by mail and in person.
  • You can apply any time of year; there's no open enrollment for Medicaid.
  • Free, trained helpers can walk you through it.

There are two ways in, and both are free.

Option 1: Your state Medicaid agency

Apply directly with your state. Medicaid.gov has a list of every state agency with its website and phone number. Federal rules require every state to accept applications online, by phone, by mail and in person, so pick whichever is easiest for you. Applying straight to your state can be faster when it's clear you qualify for Medicaid.

Option 2: HealthCare.gov

Fill out one application on HealthCare.gov (or your state's own Marketplace site if it has one). If it looks like someone in your household qualifies for Medicaid or CHIP, the Marketplace sends your information to your state, and the state contacts you. The same application checks whether you qualify for help paying for a Marketplace plan, which is useful if you're not sure where you'll land.

The Marketplace Call Center is 1-800-318-2596 (TTY 1-855-889-4325) and can take your application over the phone.

Free help

Trained helpers called assisters and navigators can help you fill out the application for free. Search for one near you at localhelp.healthcare.gov. Community health centers and hospitals often have staff who help with Medicaid applications too.

A few things that make it easier

Apply for everyone in your household who needs coverage at the same time. Answer every question, even the ones that don't seem to apply. If you're not sure of an exact amount, give your best estimate and keep a note of how you worked it out. For most income-based applications, your state can't make you come in for an interview.

Keep a copy or screenshot of your application and write down any confirmation number. If you apply by phone, note the date and the name of the person who helped you.
