CHIP for kids, help with Medicare costs, and care at home

⏱ 2 min

Key points

  • CHIP covers children whose families earn too much for Medicaid.
  • Medicare Savings Programs can pay Medicare premiums for people with low income.
  • Medicaid can pay for care at home, so people can stay out of a nursing home.
  • Our benefit finder shows other help you may qualify for.

You've now been through the whole Medicaid process. These are three related programs that families often don't know to ask about.

CHIP for children

If your children don't qualify for Medicaid because your family earns a bit too much, they may qualify for the Children's Health Insurance Program. It covers checkups, shots, doctor visits, dental and vision care, and hospital care, at low or no cost. You apply the same way as for Medicaid, any time of year. Read our guide to enrolling in CHIP.

Help paying for Medicare

People on Medicare with limited income and savings can get help from their state through a Medicare Savings Program. Depending on income, it can pay the Part B premium and sometimes deductibles and copays too. People who qualify for one of these programs also get Extra Help with prescription drug costs. Our guide to applying for Medicare explains how to apply for both.

Care at home

Medicaid can pay for help at home, such as a home health aide, help with bathing and dressing, or meals, so that older adults and people with disabilities can stay in their own homes. Every state covers home health care, and most also offer waivers with more services. Waivers often have waiting lists, so apply early. In some states, a family member can even be paid to provide the care. Read does Medicaid pay for in-home care? for the details.

Check everything at once

Families who qualify for Medicaid often qualify for SNAP food help, help with energy bills and other programs too. Our benefit finder checks them in a couple of minutes.
